California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo Field Trip Experience
My trip to Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo wqs so much fun. I had a wonderful time with Mark Cabrinha amd his architecture students. They are so close knitted that it is almost different from the high school scene. The activities that we did were take a survey. Then we all reunited and started answering Mark's questions, such as what is your vision of the learning environment of the 21st century to be? (You may leave comments below to answer the question). Anyway, the five of us high school seniors split up into groups with the college kids. Philip and his partner had an interesting building design. This is how their assignment worked: you choose or were given a design from one of many groups from previous years. Then it is you're job to figure out what to do with the inside of the building, such as turning it in to a school or an open office space. I suggested to Phillip and his friend to elevate the structure and include a flex ground floor for a cafeteria or a lobby. Since they want to show the skeleton of the building it would look a bit more artistic to show the concrete beams and the metal that holds the design together. What I like about the studio is that at the center there is a conference type of table that has a melanine surface where you can write with a dry erase marker. The thing that I also noticed was the fact that they didn`t mind the mess on their desks. It was truly the studio of choice for these students because they overhauled the existing classroom and started from "a blank slate". All around I had a wonderful time.
